When Should Your NLV Health Insurance Start?
The start date is a decision, not an administrative default — and several other things are measured from it, including which products you are eligible to apply for. There are four separate dates in play, and choosing the right one starts with telling them apart.
Four dates that get run together.
Almost every start-date question turns out to be one of these four being mistaken for another. Separating them is most of the work.
| The date | What it is | Who controls it — and what it doesn’t decide |
|---|---|---|
| The policy start date | The date you choose for cover to begin. | You propose the intended start date as part of the application. It must fall within the product’s operational rules and remain consistent with the documentation and current requirements relevant to your application. It does not follow automatically from your appointment or your travel plans — and it is the date your eligibility age is measured on. |
| Application and appointment dates | When you apply for the policy, and when your consular appointment falls. | The appointment is the consulate’s; the application is yours. Neither sets the policy start date, and neither is what your age is measured on. |
| Your travel date | When you actually move. | Yours, and frequently the one that moves. It is a reason to think about the start date — not the same thing as it. |
| Policy issue and documentation | When the policy is set up and your documents exist. | The insurer’s. Timing varies, so we do not attach a duration to it. What to check when it arrives. |
One hard rule, and it is worth knowing.
Cover does not take effect before the first premium is paid
The conditions require the first premium to be paid before cover takes effect. A policy that has been arranged is not the same as a policy that has begun — which is the single most useful thing to hold on to when you are lining dates up.

The order things happen in.
You propose the date
Before quoting, ideally — it affects which products are in range and what you will be quoted.
The policy is arranged
Application, health questionnaire, and the insurer’s assessment. See how underwriting works.
The first premium is paid
Cover cannot take effect before this. It is the step that turns an arrangement into a policy.
Documentation is checked
Against your own consulate’s current checklist, before anything is submitted — and what five published checklists actually say about the insurance item differs materially between them. What to check.
Three date decisions.
Illustrative throughout — the dates are there to show the reasoning, not to suggest a schedule that applies to you.
Cover to begin on arrival
An appointment falls in March and the intended move is in June. The applicant wants cover to begin when they arrive rather than while they are still at home.
- The start date and the appointment date are different decisions — the first is chosen, the second is given.
- Whether a start date in June suits what is being submitted in March is a question for the current checklist published by the consulate handling the application. We can go through your documentation against it with you.
A start date just after a birthday
An applicant has a birthday on 20 April and is considering a start date of 1 May.
- Eligibility age is assessed on the start date, so the older age applies — which can change which products are open to them.
- A start date before the birthday and one after it are genuinely different applications. The age guide works this through with the entry ages.
The appointment moves
A policy has been arranged around an appointment in February, and the appointment is rescheduled to April.
- Nothing is wrong with the policy — the question is whether the start date still makes sense against the timeline now being submitted.
- Whether and how a chosen start date can be adjusted is not something we’ll describe in general terms. Raise it with us and we will find out for your policy specifically.
What else the start date decides.
Which products you can apply for. Eligibility age is assessed on the policy start date — not your age today, and not your age when you enquire. A birthday falling before the start date moves the calculation. The age guide covers the entry ages and works through the boundary cases.
What your documentation says. The dates on your policy documents are the dates you will be submitting, so they need to match the timeline you are presenting. The certificate guide covers checking them.
When one contractual obligation starts running. See below — it is measured from the policy start date, which is another reason to know exactly what that date is.
One date to diarise afterwards.
If your visa is issued, send Sanitas a copy promptly
The supplied General Conditions state that evidence of visa issuance must be provided within two months of the policy start date; if it is not provided within that period, the contract terminates automatically under the stated policy terms. Check the Particular Conditions issued with your policy, and ask us if anything is unclear.
It is worth noting here rather than only on the documentation page, because the clock runs from the policy start date — the date this whole page is about.

Tell us the dates you are working to and we’ll go through how they line up — before a date is fixed rather than after. No obligation.
