The Product

What Sanitas Residents Visado is

It is a full private health insurance policy from Sanitas, S.A. de Seguros, arranged through Sanitas’s own contracted medical network in Spain. You get access to consultants, general practitioners, paediatrics and emergency centres, with diagnostic tests, surgery and hospital treatment arranged through the network as well.

Residents Visado provides Sanitas private healthcare in Spain with no copayments and no waiting periods, subject to the policy terms and the insurer’s acceptance of the application. Cover is full and unlimited throughout Spain, with access to the medical network for medical, surgical and hospital care. The policy runs for a minimum of one year and renews on the terms set out in the contract.

One distinction worth keeping straight. “No copayments” does not mean every possible treatment or expense is covered. It means the policy does not charge a per-use copayment for services that are covered under its terms. What is excluded, and how a condition you already have is treated, are separate questions — see pre-existing conditions.

Sanitas issues a separate Visado version of the Residents policy. It is a separate product from the standard Sanitas Residents policy, with its own conditions. Confirming which one you have is a short check worth making.

What’s included

No copayments — sin copagos You do not pay a separate per-use copayment when you use covered services under the policy. What that covers.
Sanitas pays the clinic directly Treatment is arranged through the Sanitas network, and the General Conditions provide that Sanitas covers the cost by direct payment to the appointed professional or centre for covered services. There is no out-of-network reimbursement route on this product, so you are not asked to fund treatment and claim it back.
No waiting periods — sin carencias The General Conditions state that the policy’s coverages are available from the effective date of the contract.
The full Sanitas network Consultants, GPs, paediatrics and emergency centres you can attend directly.
Diagnostics and treatment Tests, therapeutic methods, surgery and inpatient treatment, arranged through the network.
Emergency care Including a defined route if a life-threatening emergency takes you to a hospital outside the network.
Care at home Family medicine, paediatrics, nursing, emergency care and ambulance, where Sanitas has an arrangement locally.
Remote consultations Video and phone appointments, plus a 24-hour video emergency service.
Repatriation Transfer of the insured’s remains to the country of origin, with an escort’s travel.
Emergency assistance abroad Included as a separate cover; your Particular Conditions carry the limits that apply to you.

Waiting periods and pre-existing conditions are separate issues: how a condition you already have is treated depends on your declarations and the insurer’s underwriting decision, not on the waiting-period rule. See also what repatriation means.

Suitability

Who it may be relevant for

Residents Visado may be relevant if…

  • You are applying for the Non-Lucrative Visa and need cover arranged for that application
  • You will be aged 75 or under on the intended policy start date
  • You expect to use doctors and hospitals inside the Sanitas network in Spain
  • You are applying as a couple or family, with everyone to be insured declared together
  • You want the whole policy live from day one, with nothing phased in

Compare Residents Platinum or another Sanitas option if…

  • You will be above the entry age on your start date — start with the over-75 page, not a quote form
  • You want to choose your own doctors outside the network and claim the cost back — that is Residents Platinum’s structure
  • You want cover that follows you internationally as a main feature, rather than emergency assistance while travelling
  • You are not applying for a residence visa at all — the standard Sanitas range is broader than this one product
Product Name

The visa version is not the standard product.

Sanitas sells more than one policy called “Residents”. The Visado version is a separate product with its own conditions. Confirm the product name on your documentation reads Visado before you submit it anywhere.

Confirm the exact product name on your policy documentation before submitting it. The conditions for this product name it Sanitas Residents Visado. If your documentation does not match, ask before you submit anything. The certificate guide covers what to check, and in what order.

Using The Policy

How care is arranged

1
Walk in Consultants, GPs, paediatrics and emergency centres in the network can be attended directly. The User Guide Sanitas issues names those that need a step first.
2
Get a prescription Diagnostic tests and therapeutic methods need a written prescription from a doctor inside the network.
3
Get it authorised Surgery and inpatient treatment need Sanitas’s authorisation before the treatment goes ahead.

In a life-threatening emergency you are not expected to find a network hospital. If you are admitted somewhere outside the network, Sanitas must be told as soon as possible so it can move you to a partner centre once your condition allows. Outside that situation, treatment you arrange yourself outside the network is not covered, whoever recommended it.

There is more in the conditions on which procedures Sanitas appoints the surgeon for, how home care works, and the notice required when you change address. The application guide covers the practical steps.

Repatriation

What repatriation means

The policy includes transfer of the insured’s remains to the country of origin in the event of death, together with an escort’s travel. Funeral and burial expenses are not covered.

It is not medical evacuation. It does not mean being flown home for treatment while you are alive and ill. The full explanation is here.

What Happens Next

From quote to certificate

  1. You request a quote. Dates of birth, intended start date and where you are heading. No medical or health questions at this stage.
  2. An adviser prepares your quote. Priced for your circumstances and your intended start date, subject to product eligibility and underwriting.
  3. You complete the application. This is where Sanitas’s medical questionnaire sits. The contract is agreed on the basis of what you declare, so accuracy is the part you control.
  4. You pay the first premium. Cover does not begin until it is paid — which is exactly why start dates need planning rather than assuming. Choosing a start date.
  5. Your policy documentation follows. This is where your Particular Conditions and your insurance certificate come from. What the certificate covers.

One obligation to diarise: the conditions require documentation proving the visa was issued to reach Sanitas within two months of the policy start date. Worth diarising on the day you buy.

The Other Option

Residents or Residents Platinum?

Both are Sanitas visa products. The differences that actually decide it:

Residents Visado

  • Care arranged through the Sanitas network in Spain, with no copayments
  • Open to a wider age range — up to age 75
  • May be relevant if you expect to use doctors and hospitals in Spain

Residents Platinum Visado

  • Adds a reimbursement route: use providers outside the network and claim back
  • A lower entry age — up to age 64
  • Consider it if its additional reimbursement structure is relevant to how you expect to use the policy

Questions

Residents Visado, answered

No copayments — sin copagos. You do not pay a separate per-use copayment when you use covered services under the policy. That is not the same as saying everything is covered: it means no per-use charge for services that are covered under the policy’s terms. Exclusions and the insurer’s acceptance of your application are separate questions. No copayments, in full.
Some Spanish consulates expressly require health insurance without copayments, while published wording varies between consulates. Always check the current requirements of the consulate handling your application. The Visado products are arranged without copayments and waiting periods — check both points against the current requirements published by your consulate.
On this product, yes — all coverages are available from the effective date of the contract. That is a different question from how a condition you already have is treated, which depends on what you declare and the insurer’s underwriting decision. The distinction, in full.
Entry is open up to and including age 75, assessed on the policy start date rather than today. A birthday between now and your intended start date therefore counts. The age guide works through it, and the over-75 page covers what happens above it.
Yes. Everyone to be insured is declared in the application, and the agreement is closed on the basis of the declarations made. Persons under 14 can only be included if the people who hold their custody or guardianship are insured too, unless the parties agree otherwise — which shapes how a family policy is built before anyone quotes it.
At the application stage, in Sanitas’s own process — not when you ask us for a quote. The agreement is closed on the basis of the declarations made in that questionnaire, so answering it accurately is the part of the process you control.
No. In this cover, repatriation means transfer of the insured’s remains to the country of origin in the event of death, plus an escort’s travel. Funeral and burial costs are not included. The full explanation.
The premium is annual, and the age attained and the geographical zone are among the factors that build it. What drives the price.
Your documentation should name the product Sanitas Residents Visado. If it reads otherwise, ask before you submit it anywhere.
